Earlier this month, Google made a purchase—Firebase, a service used by developers to build mobile and web apps—that will allow the search engine giant to grow in the sector of cloud computing. Firebase was born in 2011 and works to help developers integrate cloud synchronization to mobile apps. More specifically, Firebase is the component that makes apps share data through the cloud.
Purchasing Firebase is not Google’s only acquisition this year in terms of cloud computing technologies. In May, they bought Stackdriver (a monitoring service for developers) and Zync (a visual effects company).
Why did Google acquire Firebase now?
Easy, because the use of mobile capabilities is quickly expanding and has the most growth of any category in the field of app development. That said, app development can be a difficult job; however, the acquisition of Firebase will help developers to collaborate easier. In addition to helping collaboration, syncing data (on the web and across mobile apps) Firebase was made possible without the tedious process of writing complex codes.
Along with making it easier to work on web-based applications, Firebase also makes it possible to work on applications offline and contains libraries for all web platforms (Android and iOS included). Google’s ultimate goal of acquiring Firebase is to combine it with their existing cloud platform and create their own platform for developing apps.
Firebase made the decision to sell to Google both to help their company grow and to access Google’s cloud. According to CIO-today, the CEO of Firebase, James Tamplin, ensured Firebase employees that they would remain separate from Google itself—i.e. developers using Firebase will continue their work without any changes.
Why buy the cloud at all?
If you’re a developer and haven’t heard about Google’s Firebase acquisition yet, don’t worry because Google has yet to full demonstrate the features that they will now be able to offer. On November 4, Google will host Cloud Platform Live in San Francisco where they will show off Firebase’s integration. After this point, developers working with Firebase apps should see immediate results.
Surprisingly, according to IDC (a research company) Google only comes in at fifth amongst ‘platform-as-a-service’; therefore, by acquiring Firebase, Google will be better equipped to compete with Amazon (currently #1) in terms of cloud-computing developers. Microsoft has also been making improvements to their cloud-based services. This includes upgrading Azure.

If you’re just beginning to take advantages of what cloud-based services have to offer, you’re about to be in good company. IDC states that the market for the use of cloud services has grown to $45.7 billion last year and expected to go up another 23 percent in the next four years.
As Google updates their cloud-based services, they will continue to rise in the ranks of cloud developers. We invite you to continue browsing our blog and knowledge center to find out more about what is current in cloud computing services and how this technology can help your business.
