Recently, Innovative Architects participated in the Technology Center of Georgia’s annual Bytes for Bites food drive competition, earning 36,848 total points and 368 points per employee – the most computed points of any large company. In total, IA raised $8,954 and 832 pounds for the Atlanta Community Food Bank over a short 2-week period.
It’s impressive, yes…and totally a fluke.
We raise money all the time for all kinds of causes. But what made this event so different, bringing in record donations?
Competition. Good, old-fashioned competition.
Once we pitted one location against another – even though they are only 25 feet apart – the game was ON! Our teams challenged, encouraged and talk-trashed their way to the finish line, where the Atlanta Community Food Bank became the real winner.
Here’s what we learned from this event:
- Make it personal. We added spice and personality by making our two interns “team captains.” Email reminders to the team could be more casual and personal when coming from one of their own.
- Make it competitive. The spirit of the competition made folks truly dig deep. One intern offered to shave his head to receive donations (which he did!). With our new competitive spirit, over 80% of our employees participated – a record number!
- Old school still works. Yes, we took in more online donations than real food, but each team still had a collection bin. The visual reminder, in addition to electronic ones, was important to keep the contest at the top of everyone’s mind. In addition, we celebrated milestones with a “Food-O-Meter” on the wall. Placed strategically by the restrooms, where everyone was sure to go, out team could keep an eye on our progress.
- Never underestimate last minute donations. One team seemingly had the contest “in the bag,” but then the other team brought in 500 lbs. of food overnight! Keep the momentum with frequent communications, even as the end nears.
Ranked in the Top 50 Best Workplaces for Giving Back by Fortune in 2016, Innovative Architects operates with community service in mind, supporting local efforts through time and donations.
We are proud that our local impact on the Atlanta Community Food Bank will allow ACFB to continue to supply 60 million meals annually in 29 metro Atlanta counties. Childcare centers, senior centers, community kitchens and food pantries all benefit from access to ACFB’s resources.
Congrats to the winners of our Bytes for Bites food competition – including those benefited at the ACFB!
