Three years ago, the Premier League Football Club Sunderland AFC became the first Football Club to have a responsive website. Now, a digital agency has redesigned the club’s website to be mobile-first.

This move will provide Sunderland AFC fans with a one-of-a-kind experience using mobile devices.
In order to provide this experience, the design and digital team for Sunderland AFC and Aqueduct collaborated on this project, which provides mobile devices that have retina display access to high definition photos and videos in full HD. These services were made possible by Stream UK.
Additionally, creating this new platform will allow Sunderland AFC’s commercial presence to develop rapidly. Examples of how rapid growth will occur is by releasing promotional signposting to areas that will generate more fans and increasing revenue options (including increased ticketing, retail options, and encouraging people to book their shared spaces for conferences or weddings in the Stadium Of Light.)
Sunderland AFC’s mobile-first website took roughly 6 months to create. The culmination of these efforts led to a unique website that is a celebration of not only the Sunderland team itself, but also the entire region and the club’s fans as well.
Sunderland AFC’s Head of Digital, Stuart Vose, speaks highly of the mobile-first website:
“Performance across mobile devices was key to our thinking throughout the process, and the innovative way we have integrated marketing and commercial messaging means we have a truly valuable channel for everyone involved.”
On the other side of the equation, Aqueduct Founder Rob Oubridge is just as pleased. Together they have “been able to deliver a future-proof, fan-centric experience directly allowing Sunderland AFC to step forward in its mission to deliver a truly rich, engaging site for its fans and to benefit the club’s business plan and shareholders.”
This is just one example of how mobile-first technology is making its way into the mainstream world.
