According to Paul Farhi of the Washington Post, ads for this year’s Super Bowl cost organizations around $4 Million for a 30-second commercial. One of the most poignant ads this year was Microsoft’s Empowering commercial. Running a full minute, the approximately $8 Million ad (debatable given the insights in Farhi’s article) Microsoft—in their first ever Super Bowl commercial—highlights not their products, but how technology changes the world.
While not the main focus of the advertisement, one way Microsoft technology is changing the world is by bringing its people closer together. This happens in the form of softwares like Skype. Not only can it allow school children interact with other children around the world, it can also allow children to speak with their parents who may be stationed in other parts of the world in the military. By this extension, it can also allow soldiers to witness the birth of their children thousands of miles away from the delivery room.
By far the main focus of the Empowering commercial is how technological advances are changing the face of medicine. First, the entire advertisement is narrated by former New Orleans Saint Steve Gleason. Gleason suffers from ALS and has lost the ability to walk and speak. Technologies such as Microsoft’s Surface tablet and Kinect (…the imaging camera most people associate with the Xbox gaming system) give Gleason the ability to communicate. The Kinect camera follows the movement of his eyes and the Surface speaks for him.
The advertisement also features a team of surgeons using a Kinect camera to help them fully visualize the process of a surgical procedure. The Kinect camera follows the hand movements of the surgical team—allowing them to move the image on the screen without having to physically touch anything. This not only helps keep a sterile environment, but keeps doctors from having to stop their work to simply look at an image.
A deaf woman hearing a loved one’s voice, a blind man painting again, and children walking with the use of prosthetic limbs are also shown in the advertisement. Along with these technologies, other softwares (such as SharePoint) are available to help make life easier for people and companies.
