When SharePoint 2013 was released, one of the features included was an enhanced version of its mobile features, with many experts suggesting that the enhancements led to the best mobile device support yet. As good as SharePoint 2013 is, there are still some areas for improvement when it comes to mobility.
Here are 4 ways we think SharePoint can improve:
1. Limited Mobile View Functionality
Some complain about mobile view functionality for content that is more complex than a simple document to be browsed. Furthermore, Joe Herres, VP of H3 Solutions, states that for some people, navigation can be an issue. When navigating, you either get content from the home page or you have to find the site contents and wade through several lists or libraries (including those that don’t apply to many visitors) to find the information you need.
2. Limitations with Office 365
If you’re planning on using Office 365, be aware that you will only have two channels upon install: one for desktop browsers and one for mobile devices. You should also be aware that you will not currently have the option for creating more device channels. Since you can’t create additional device channels for multiple mobile devices, you don’t have the ability to create optimized experiences.
3. Difficulties in Creating Responsive Design Sites
Responsive web design is a buzzword these days; however, SharePoint is not responsive by default. Therefore, it takes effort to convert into a responsive site. Those familiar with master page design and CSS could easily create a responsive publishing site. Be aware, however, that adding advanced widgets and interactivity makes things more difficult.
4. Poor Image Renditions and Responsive Design Integration
One of the new features to SharePoint 2013 is image rendition, which works by allowing images to be displayed differently on various pages of a website. The problem is that this feature doesn’t play well with responsive design unless you’re willing/able to write extremely specific (custom) code or have access to third party resources of integration.

SharePoint 2013 is an impressive software suite; however, you need to ensure that you’re using it to work for your business instead of against it. Find out how Innovative Architects can help you use SharePoint to enhance your business.
